Have you ever skied? Why don't you like it?Same questions with skating. I love skating. (I don't like skiing. I went for the first time with a guy I was sorta kinda dating back in high school who loved skiing but I couldn't get the hang of it and kept falling down and it was so embarrassing, makes me laugh now though so it's all good :) )

If you have children, would you prefer them to be your own or adopted?

And if your own, isn't that somehow selfish when there are many starving orphans in the world with no parents already?

I would prefer them to be my own but that doesn't mean I don't care for starving orphans. I mean are you planning on opening an orphanage for starving children? Also you'll need to adopt equally from every country in the world or you don't care about the starving orphans in those countries you don't adopt from, so you're looking at 195 orphans total. But then aren't you just encouraging colonialism by taking that child out of their culture and forcing your western American views on them?

That is silly. Why would I have to get one from every country? I could make a difference if I adopted only one. Yes good point about the culture although when they are starving I don't think they are adoring the culture that doesn't feed them.

I am not saying I don't prefer my own, just it seems sort of selfish when there are plenty of children around already.

Yes it's better to let them starve then bring them to evil wicked America. I mean how awful would it be to share our wealth with them?!

Ok I would like to start by saying I'm sorry if I'm getting off topic (although I hope I'm not since I am about to ask you a question) and I respect your desire to have your own children. I have nothing against people having children. My sister had a baby and my nephew is one of the main bright spots in my life. I will even have a baby myself if I were ever to get married and it were important to my husband, but my deep down my dream is to foster/ adopt. So with that said, please know that the questions I ask you, Eleventh (since this is the ask Eleventh thread :P ) are not out of judgment but simply a desire to understand you and a hope that you would think about this topic a little more.

What about fostering or adopting children from your own area? Then there would be none of the worries of taking children out of their own country and culture. Yes children in other countries are still starving but we can always send money to those countries instead of taking away the children. But the thing that weighs heavily on me is how many unwanted children live right here in my own province. True a lot of them are probably unwanted because of specialized care requirements, age, or being troubled because of their past and it takes a lot of effort to raise kids suffering in those ways. I personally feel up to that, but maybe I've been called to it. Maybe it is a thing that not everyone can do, but there are kids without special needs in your area who need parents, so I guess my question is just what is it that makes you want to have your own child instead of adopting one of these kids? But hey, know that I am just curious and you don't even have to answer if you don't want to and I respect that you are different than me, that is totally fine, I just want to understand you better.

If I was lead to foster or adopt a child I would do it from my own area. I do not feel led to do so right now, mostly because I am not in a place to do so. Growing up my family didn't do either of those, mostly because we were moving around a lot and wouldn't have been able to do that. What we did do was make sure we had a room in our house where people could stay long term, since moving to where we are we have roomed several college age people during transitional periods of their lives. That is what my family has been called to do.

As for why my own kids instead of adopting, I think it is God's normative plan for a marriage to produce children. As I said I am not opposed to adoption or fostering but at the same time having children of your own is a good thing.

MF as Ragtag says we can send money to other countries instead of taking away their children, their literal future. I'm sure some families are led to adopt foreign children but as Ragtag says there are plenty of children in need here in the Americas.

Also you need to understand the historical context of wealthy nations taking babies from less developed countries, it turns into an industry that exploits women in those countries and actually ends up producing more children specifically for the purpose of selling them to Westerners. It also does have elements of cultural hegemony where other cultures futures are literally taken from them and Americanized. Not saying there's anything wrong with American culture but it's wrong to assume that it is the only right one or that it is superior.

Well like I said, I didn't know what I thought on this myself. That actually does make sense. So I guess you convinced me.

Am I allowed to bump threads that are buried in the Debate Hall?

Wow, I actually convinced you of something. Forgive me though if I was too harsh, this is something I am sensitive about having grown up around many different cultures.

Yes, I think this is a first. So congrats. No, what you said made perfect sense and some of it I hadn't known before. I don't see anything harsh, especially compared to some things you've said. :P

Ok. I will once I get to a computer and can see better.

Are there any other true villains beside Doctor Blackgaard?

Favorite author, hard, I'd have to say Jim Butcher at this point in time
