Memorization

Post

How does everyone here memorize Bible verses? I am interested in reading how everyone does this. Do we have any of those amazingly talented people who can memorize things very easily?

Also, how have memorized verses helped you in your spiritual life?

Good, Wooton, but my question was more along the lines of how you memorize. Do you memorize one phrase at a time, or say the whole passage over and over, or do you use another method?

I memorize one phrase at a time, slowly building on the passage I have memorized. How about everyone else?

I memorized it for my church and I did a verse or 2 a week.

Okay. I think that's the best way to memorize, but I suppose people's minds work differently. Anyone else?

Um, I've memorized several notable verses. When I was about 5 or 6, my Grandpa said that if I memorized John 3:16, he would give me a dollar. I buy anything with the dollar, of course, but the important thing was that I memorized the verse.

I have a couple ways that I like to memorize. The first is to take a whiteboard, and write the whole verse on it. Read it out loud. Then erase all the words starting with a letter, like "L", say the verse again. Erase all the words starting with another letter, like "M", say it again,.... until the whole board is erased. But, when I am memorizing my verses for AWANA at piano lesson (right before AWANA, heh heh,) I either do the whiteboard thing quietly, or divide the verse into chunks, and concentrate on one chunk at a time.

I read them over and over, Tag team with a friend, Create a game out of it for a couple or multiple people.
Act them out, Create skits, Use prizes. Depending on your surroundings, There are a ton of ways to memorize. Whether it's for yourself, Or another, All you need is a little bit of creativity and you're all set. ;)

When I was younger, there were these videos by Steve Green that I used to watch. He would take a verse like, "A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones." and then stick them in a catchy song. I just watched a few of them and so many memories came back. I remember that when I was scared, greedy or I was complaining, my mind would go to those songs and they'd help.

I haven't really done much verse memorization recently, but I should. I know they're a lot of help.

Whenever I try to memorize things I go backwards. (especially a chapter)

1. I will say the last line/verse first, and say it until it's stuck.
2. Then, say the second to last line/verse until it's stuck.
3. I will then say the second to last line and the last line together (without looking at the page).
4. I repeat those steps until the whole chapter is memorized.

It sounds a little complicated, but it really works.

I write down whatever or passage or lesson (whatever I'm trying to memorize) I keep writing over and over until I have it mostly down. Then I doodle it, like I'll write it down in my mom's hand writing, I'll write it with my right hand (I am left handed so this is harder than it sounds) I will write it in Greek. (Okay I think you get my point.) I remember pictures, so I'll picture it in my head, if I memorizing something like the Christmas story, I will act it out. I have to be careful though, because I'm very good at cramming, and I will "memorize", and end up forgetting it by the end of the year. :D
What is forever..? I shall see you again. Just after the mist has faded and time has stopped, over on the other side. Enjoy your journey and I'll enjoy mine.

I usually write it on a whiteboard then erase words, several at a time, but I also have an app that I can use that had fill in the blanks, multiple choice, etc. and that has really worked!

Usually what ever I am struggling with, I look up my verse then for 20 minutes try to memorize it, then I go around saying it all day til I got it down, then I say it whenever that problem comes up (disobedience, working for the lord and not for men, etc.). *Take a big breath*

My family went to a week of "family camp", a camp for the whole family. At the Bible camp, there is a theme verse for the week, and different verses everyday. We sing the verses to catchy songs, and do actions for them too. I still remember them from last summer :)
