The Duchess of Logic comes before the Court to make a statement concerning recent activities of its ranking members. She is going to go ahead and make her statement, on the grounds that she sees it as a pressing issue that ought to be nipped in the bud.

(She's also going to stop speaking in the third person, because for some reason it's making her misspell words as she types them.)

Guys, I think we need to tone our behavior down a bit. I know we're here because we enjoy honest discussion, and in the heat of a debate, it's hard to keep yourself from reacting emotionally (I've done this more times than I really care to admit). But I think we need to stop being quite as aggressive as we are, especially around newer members. I'm not going to give names (and although using a little common sense might tell you who I'm talking about, I would request that none of you do the same), but I've had a conversation with someone who felt very intimidated by our behavior, and looking back on it, this user had a point. It's fine to make your point clear and not budge, but we need to remember that we aren't speaking to each other—people can't read our body language or see our faces or hear our vocal inflection. We have to remember to choose our words carefully, especially when dealing with people who aren't experienced, because when typing, words and emoticons are basically all we've got.

I'm not saying to play with kid gloves (especially when dealing with someone who you know can take aggression in his or her stride), but debates can be pretty intense experiences, especially online, and we need to be conscious of the fact that not everyone is used to this. There's standing your ground and there's being insensitive—and believe me, I know I have room to grow on this, too.
