How can I audition for
Adventures in Odyssey? -Submitted
by Elizabeth, Carrie, Amanda, & Evie
|
 |
Thanks for your interest in voice
acting for Odyssey. While The Odyssey Scoop isn't affiliated with
Focus on the Family, we can provide some information to get you
started: According to Focus on the Family:
All of the Adventures in Odyssey shows
are now recorded under a union contract, which requires that the
entire cast be members in the American Federation of Television
and Radio Artists (AFTRA).
If you're not a member of AFTRA and are hoping to break into the
voice talent world, contact your local radio or television
stations and ask about the possibility of an internship. Once
you "get your foot in the door," try to find an experienced
individual who would be willing to mentor you in all aspects of
radio and television acting. You might also find it helpful to
get involved in a local theater group; it's possible they could
teach you some "tricks of the trade" that would be useful in the
voice world.
If you are a member of AFTRA and live near Burbank, please feel
free to send a voice sample, headshot and bio to Focus on the
Family's Audio Resources Department. Their staff would be happy
to consider your portfolio as a future prospect. To get the
mailing address for this department, you may contact Focus by
phone at 1-800-A-FAMILY or e-mail questions@whitsend.org.

What does Eugene mean whenever he
says "proverbially speaking"? -Submitted
by Eugene's twice removed Canadian Cousin
|
 |
Proverbial means "of or relating to
or resembling or expressed in a proverb." The saying "hand in the
cookie jar" means stealing. Proverbial just means it's a well known
statement, coming from a proverb. So when Eugene says "proverbially
speaking," he is relating the topic at hand to a well-known proverb.
For example, in
Suspicious Minds, in a conversation about computers and
transportation, Connie would rather "take an air-conditioned car any
day, as opposed to Eugene's preference of riding a bike. Eugene
says, "Mr. Whittaker, what can I do? It's like casting the
proverbial pearls before swine. "Pearls before swine" refers to a
quotation from Matthew 7:6 in Jesus's Sermon on the Mount, implying
that things (such as pearls) should not be put in front of people
(or in this case, swine) who do not appreciate their value. In
Eugene's case, he feels that he is offering valuable information to
Connie ("safe, economical, and healthy" use of biking instead of
using a vehicle), but she does not appreciate the advice he gives
and doesn't understand that what he has to say is valuable because
she prefers a car as opposed to a bike. She merely shoots down what
he has to say by saying that "you come in all sweaty" when you ride
a bike. "Give me an air conditioned car any day," she retorts.
Can you find any references in Adventures in
Odyssey in which Eugene says "proverbially speaking"? Why not
stop and think about what he is really saying? |

Why does Whit ask Harlow Doyle
"Haven't I seen you somewhere before?" in Harlow Doyle, Private
Eye? -Submitted
by Dan & Arlene
|
 |
This is merely a tip-of-the-hat
reference to the Officer Harley episodes from the earlier days of
Adventures in Odyssey. Most of the Harley episodes were
re-produced with the exclusion of Harley as a character due to
listeners' complaints that Harley made a mockery of the
responsibilities of local authorities. Harlow Doyle's character was
created later to carryover Harley's personality and bring him back
in a non-offensive way. And, in answer to
your question, Whit hasn't seen Harlow before, but he is merely
reminded of Officer Harley from days past (a beautiful reference for
long-time fans). |

How do I start my own
Adventures in Odyssey fan site? Does one have to obtain
permission from Focus on the Family to create one? -Submitted
by MortalCoil#1Fan
|
 |
It isn't necessary to obtain
permission from Focus on the Family to create your own fan site. I
would caution you, however, not to just start your own website about
Adventures in Odyssey just for the sake of having one or
because "everyone's doing it." There have been quite a few fan sites
out there which have come and gone because the site owners lost
interest or had a lack of originality. I would recommend if you're
thinking about opening your own AIO fan site, make sure you use
originality and creativity. If your goal is to provide the latest
news about Odyssey, it might be perceived as redundant at your
site's launch as two primary sites already exist to do so: The
Odyssey Scoop (us!) and
AIO Wiki. Don't
copy what you see already happening on existing fan sites. In other
words, a good rule of thumb is: don't copycat! If an
already-existing website is doing a fantastic job of providing news
or some other feature, then breaking into the competition might not
be the wisest idea. Why settle for less when you can create a
website which offers your own exclusive benefit?
I speak from experience on this one. If you would
really want to create a fan site about Adventures in Odyssey,
ask yourself: "Do I see myself keeping this site going for five
years or more?" If you have the drive to keep things going and not
quit, I would recommend starting a site. But make sure you offer
something that the other fan sites don't. You want to stand out.
Things to Consider Before Jumping In:
- How dedicated am I to keeping a fan site
going? Do I see myself keeping this site going for five years or
more?
- Do I have something unique to offer that
other sites don't? Is my site original?
- Can I write well enough to engage visitors?
- Do I have the necessary skills involved in
creating and maintaining a fan site?
- Will I be able to provide a nice looking site
with good, visual aesthetics? (Good graphic design is key)
- Do I have money to keep a website going?
(domain name and web hosting)
- Am I staying within legal parameters?
One final note: Be careful—assuming
you do start your own website. You don't want to infringe on
any copyright laws. Please do not make any Adventures in
Odyssey episode downloads available as you do not have legal
permission to do so. Regarding images, Focus on the Family is
generally pretty lenient, assuming you are true to the brand and
don't claim them as your property. It might be a good idea to
include a disclaimer on your fan site which gives credit to Focus on
the Family. |

I am new to Adventures in
Odyssey and don't know where to start. What do you recommend? -Submitted
by Heather
|
 |
Beginning your journey through Adventures in Odyssey can be a
daunting task. It all depends on whether or not you want to collect
the entire series.
Our Recommendation
If you plan on collecting the
whole series, we recommend you start at the beginning with the very
first collection,
The Adventure Begins.
This collection, along with the albums following, establishes the floor
plan of the show, introduces the town's characters, and immerses you
into what the show is all about.
Of course, many fans receive Odyssey
albums as gifts or begin collecting the series out of order. Either way
works since Adventures in Odyssey is about character development
and maintains an overall consistency. Starting chronologically or at
random is a fun and worthwhile process. The series gets better and
better as it unfolds, and the sound design and music improve with it as
well.
If you don't plan on collecting the entire
series and would like to get a feel for what the series is about, some
special collections are also available. Each collection contains
previously released episodes, so if you decide to collect the series in
chronological order later, you may discover a lot of repeats.
-
Discovering Odyssey
Created for new beginners, this collection introduces
Odyssey's main characters, the setting, and much more.
-
Encore Collection
The Encore Collection features some of
Odyssey's best episodes from the 80's, 90's and 00's. Provides a
great overview of the various episode genres.
-
Platinum
Collection
The Platinum Collection showcases episodes
from AIO's first 20 years. Provides a great overview of the various
episode genres.
-
For God and Country
This collection features episodes from American history,
highlighting yet another of AIO's many episode genres.
-
The Blackgaard Chronicles
One of Adventures in Odyssey's most popular sagas ever is
available in its own CD package.
-
Novacom Saga
Of course, AIO has created a collection of its
longest-running story arc. The Novacom Saga is filled with
action-adventure, mystery, and unexpected twists. This series was
the most talked about and anticipated from week to week when it
originally aired.
-
Bible Eyewitness
Collector's Set and
Bible
Eyewitness: Hall of Faith
Both Bible-themed collections contain a large
majority of episodes dealing with the Bible.
