Philip Glossman
Once called "everyone's favorite weasel", Philip Glossman
was a recurring character from the early days of AIO up until the end of
the eleven-part Darkness Before Dawn
story arc. He was voiced by
Paul McCusker.
Glossman works for the government in some undefined capacity. He never
specifically defines exactly what his role as a government
representative or formal job description is despite repeated inquiries
by multiple characters on numerous occasions. He never shows a badge and
it is questionable exactly what legitimate range of authority, if any,
his role as a public servant actually gives him. He is a flunky of
Dr. Regis Blackgaard.
History
Philip Glossman first appeared as a member of the city
council in flashbacks during the 1987 episode #19:
Recollections.
He opposed the attempts of Jenny Whittaker
to save the Fillmore Recreation Center from destruction. He was also
flustered at the fact the Universal Press Foundation outbid the Webster
Development Firm by half a million dollars by an effort spearheaded by
Jenny's widowed husband Whit.
Glossman did not reappear until the 1989 two-part episode
The Nemesis.
This time, he supported Dr. Regis
Blackgaard's attempt to open an arcade named Blackgaard's Castle.
A year later, Glossman was forced to resign his city council position
after making racist remarks in
Not One of Us.
Despite this, he was back two years later, this time working for the
state Department of Transportation. During this episode,
Timmy's Cabin,
he attempted to build a highway through Tom
Riley's Apple Farm and level the cabin rebuilt by Timmy Riley, the
deceased son of Tom Riley. Despite ultimately being thwarted, this was
not the last time he would return to Odyssey.
In 1994, not long after the abrupt departure of Whit, Tom ran for mayor.
Philip Glossman reappeared, along with two men from the Environmental
Detection Agency. They attempted to discredit Tom by creating a scandal
involving the Edgebiter Chemical Company. The attempt failed and Tom won
the election.
Glossman's final appearances as a main character came during 1995's
dramatic Darkness Before Dawn
story arc. During the eleven-part arc, Glossman aided Dr. Blackgaard's
attempts to take over Whit's End. After Dr. Blackgaard's explosive end,
Glossman was arrested.
Glossman made a cameo appearance in
A Capsule Comes to
Town, in which he is being interviewed by
Bryan Dern.
