Live Action Winnie the Pooh Announced. What? Why!?

Post

So, Cinderella got a live action movie, Mulan is in production. Beauty in the Beast in a couple years in the future, so is Dumbo and the Jungle Book. So far so bearable. I'm told the Cinderella is awesome and I'm pretty excited about a live action Jungle Book, it would be a good opportunity to bring in the movies goofy fun but also some of the more serious mood the book has. So, what else could use a live action remake? Tangled? Wouldn't it be cool seeing that dam sequence in live action? Or maybe witness the transformation Snow Whit's stepmother in live action? I know, how about a live action Winnie the Pooh!

This makes no sense. Pooh will still be animated. It's just now he'll be CG. Like every other animated character in the modern movie universe. Yay. We just got an awesome, hand drawn masterpiece of a Winnie the Pooh film. It essentially relaunched the genre, ignoring the previous Pooh Universe.

And what will the new movie be about? Christopher Robin grown up. Yeah. I suppose I could roll with that, but I'd rather see another hand-drawn film. Another masterpiece would be good after all the acceptably-eh Pooh's Heffalump movie stuff. (How can spellcheck not know heffalaump?)

Feel free to talk it up.

Whinnie the Pooh? I don't care about that much, it's a book not a movie to me, and anyway it would have to be completely animated because it's just strange when part is animated and part is real people. This is going to be so weird.

Re: A hand-drawn film, Disney axed their 2D animation department about two years ago, so I don't think that dream is going to become a reality, for good or ill. (Source)

As far as the adaptation itself is concerned, though, I really think that Disney needs some more original films. It seems like they're making sequel after remake after sequel in the upcoming years (and often unnecessarily—do we really need a Frozen 2 when the first one is "ehh" enough?). Yes, there are some original films coming out (i.e. Inside Out and Moana), and I am excited for The Incredibles 2, but Disney didn't become the animation and storytelling juggernaut it is by playing it safe and marketing the same things over and over. I'm sure those films will be fine, but that's not the point—art that makes a lasting impact pushes boundaries rather than constantly repeating itself.

Another Winnie the Pooh movie? I enjoy Pooh very much, but I'm not sure how well it will go over. They have already relaunched Pooh Bear in many different forms, both movies and tv shows, but I don't ever see much about them. I think live-action movies make more sense when there is more human characters, and not so many animal characters. Especially Pooh Bear animals, where they aren't even actual animals, but all cartoon-ized.

Unless, of course, they make them like the classic Winnie-the-Pooh characters. Then I would absolutely /love/ it.

Oh please no. This trend of animated characters interacting with live-action people needs to stop. It was a terrible idea when it started and it's terrible now.

Hmm, I don't really like animated character movies.
