I'm honestly wondering. I hear mumbo jumbo from different people about scientific studies, or verses, or the world, and I want to know what the real answer is.

SirWhit wrote:So why is rock music evil again?
This is a difficult question to answer, because you can't really build a solid case against rock music from the Bible. You could focus on how wild the beat is. Or you could focus on how bad the lyrics can get. Or the life of the singers and the sins they are in. The possibility that it's roots might be from the Witch-doctors in Africa. The simple fact that yes, it is a genre of music that vasts amount of people from the other Kingdom enjoy.

Personally, I have heard so much and argued so much about it here on the SS, that I don't have a solid answer as to why it's "evil." For me, simply looking at the bands, the way they dress, the way they sing, the irreverent lyrics etc. doesn't even seem remotely close to God or holy or glorifying to Jesus.

Sorry if that doesn't answer your question, but that's all I can say anymore.

So what genres are OK according to your difficult to understand standards?

-- Fri Aug 14, 2015 12:30 am --

Or maybe to clarify what makes a genre "OK?" Sedate crowds? Performers wearing formal dress?

I'd like to share the lyrics of my favorite song, written by a fairly heavy metal Christian rock band, Disciple.
"Someday"

There are days when all the color turns to gray
And it feels like there's no solace from the pain
And I'm on my knees asking for a reason why
But the answers all seem miles and miles away

We are all designed to hope
Built to long for something more
So I will hold on, hold on
Cause we will overcome

Someday we will rise above the pain of this world
Someday the grave and death will lose their sting
There'll be no more tears and no more shame
And all our scars will fade away
Only love will remain, someday
Someday

Well they say that You make beauty out of ash
But something has to burn before You can
So I will trust You while I am
Somewhere in the shadowlands
You won't leave me, You see me
This is not the end

Someday we will rise above the pain of this world
Someday the grave and death will lose their sting
There'll be no more tears and no more shame
And all our scars will fade away
Only love will remain, someday
Someday

Someday we won't call this home
Someday death will lose it's hold
But until then we will hold on, hold on, hold on

We will rise above
We will rise above

Someday we will rise above the pain of this world
Someday the grave and death will lose their sting
There'll be no more tears and no more shame
And all our scars will fade away
Only love will remain, someday

Someday we won't call this home
Someday death will lose it's hold
But until then we will hold on, hold on,
Someday
Sorry, but how is that irreverent lyrics? how is it not glorifying to Jesus? How is it not holy?

We agree on a lot of stuff, like nonresistance, but apparently not this.... :-/ is just something I feel very strongly about

Do you know what the DNA fallacy is? If so, what is it, and why is it called a fallacy?

Why do you have church meetings on Sundays?

Would your whole family disown you if you fell in love with a man with a pony tail? (oh, wait, you aren't allowed to fall in love...the world does that...)

If a classical music song was composed by a Christian but performed by atheists would it be okay to listen to?

More liberal? You. Most liberal person? I guess Spoon. *hides*
SirWhit wrote:So what genres are OK according to your difficult to understand standards?
Probably Classical. I don't know enough about the other genres to judge this really.
SirWhit wrote:Or maybe to clarify what makes a genre "OK?" Sedate crowds? Performers wearing formal dress?
It has to be much more than that. They got to be singing like...let's go with Heaven's standards, since that's our Kingdom. Anticipating the next question... I think you could get a pretty good idea of Heaven's standards by reading Revelation and the songs that were sung to Jesus.
sing wrote:Sorry, but how is that irreverent lyrics? how is it not glorifying to Jesus? How is it not holy?
I like those lyrics. Did I say all rock songs? Also, some songs can have great lyrics, but is sung in an irreverent manner.

In honor of the day Christ rose from the dead.

WHY WOULD I WANT TOO?? Probably...if he was worldly.

Depends on how the atheists performed it.

@MF It may interest you to know that there is a classical song called The Love Witch. Additionally, lots of operas, which are classical in nature, are all about irresponsible behavior and being wild and sinful.

On a seperate note, it's interesting that the Jews worshipped God in music, and I would bet you that there weren't many strings and beautiful classical music there. So...were they wrong?

Easy. You are nonresistant (or a Pacifist I should say) and go to a non-Protestant church. ALTHOUGH YOU ARE STILL LIBERAL...just so you know.

Ok, good to know. Every genre has problems.

How did you know they didn't use strings or beautiful classical music? What do you think of this Psalm?
Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.

2 Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.

3 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.

4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.

5 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.

6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.

Sure sounds like classical music to me! NOT. I mean, of course they used stringed instruments but the violin and stringed instruments as we know them today didn't exist until much later.

-- Fri Aug 14, 2015 1:04 pm --

Also, since you admit that Classical has problems then why should we consume it? I mean if the standard is heaven's perfect music than imperfect human genres are unacceptable. LET'S GET RID OF MUSIC!!

I really get tired of people stomping down on Rock. It is just another kind of music. I feel because some people dislike the sound of rock or loud music, they hate it. There is no argument as you yourself said that comes from the Bible that can condemn it.

Any why what is wrong with drums?

I think you are over reacting to my point of view. As I said before, I don't think I'm qualified to debate this. I think there are major problems with Rock music but I haven't yet tapped into the right reasons, or either the reasons are not good enough for all of you.

Blitz wrote:Any why what is wrong with drums?
What's wrong with them? Not exactly sure. Well they are only there for the beat. They don't harmonize.
sing wrote:How are we to decide what is a reverent manner?
Would you be fine with listening to it if Jesus was standing right there with you?
Eleventh Doctor wrote:What two good quantities did you cut out of your opinion of me?
(I considered adding "extremely curious" to that list) :D

You forgive quickly, and maybe you didn't realize this, but you are patient and enduring with people who have off the wall beliefs like Trolls, (and people who dont stop arguing, like me.) No, you aren't patient with their beliefs, but you treat them very respectfully. And you have many other amazing qualities even though I focused more critical because I knew you wanted that point of view. :P
