#045: What Are We Gonna Do About Halloween?

Post

Kids all over Odyssey want to go out for Halloween, but Whit comes up with a better idea.
For those who have heard this episode, what do you think about the way this episode handled Halloween? It aired 34 years ago, how do you think it measures up now?

Well, I don't think there's a strong correlation between an episode's strength and its age. Although it'd be hard to argue that the first season was the best, most of the episodes were at least decent, and some were very good. They also tended to have more 'slice of life' than later on, which is appealing and somewhat underdone.

______

What I think I appreciate most about this episode is that it acknowledges there is a problem in the first place. Although Mr. Renfield and Mr. Whittaker ultimately aren't able to agree on the proper response to Halloween, they do agree on something much more important: they both believe it should be taken seriously. Connie isn't a Christian at this point, so we expect her reaction to mirror the secular world's at large, but what is alarming is that much of modern Christendom would echo her stance: "what's the big deal?" Well, this is another instance of accepting ideas, behaviors, attitudes, atmospheres, and spirits that go against Scripture, and ignoring, minimizing, or trying to 'reinterpret' verses, when they clearly contradict the cultural norm. That is a big deal. We cannot sacrifice convictions for convenience and suppose that we are aligned with God's will, and likewise, we cannot be rooted in Scripture while denying the power and reality of the spiritual world.

In a small way, this episode encourages listeners to be spiritually sensitive and to be willing to change your lives to align with God's word. It also shows that, when you do, things are liable to turn out a lot better than they would have otherwise. It may not be one of the 'greatest' episodes, but it is certainly one of the more relevant ones!
A classic never goes out of style.
