I don't really see a universal command for each couple to have as many children as possible. Yes God says be fruitful and multiply but that seems more of a directive to us as a species, which we've done. There are places in the world with serious overpopulation issues and others with food shortages. Seems to me like we'd be bad stewards of our resources if we keep having children at historical rates, especially now that the infant mortality rate is so low and life expectation are so high.

Actually PF the reason to have lots of kids comes from the idea that you need hands for the farm, girls to marry off for their dowry, and to make up for the high infant mortality rate. There's no reason in our modern society to have 19 children, however recent that idea maybe it's still a legitimate view.
