Wouldn't you notice if someone was deliberately unlocking a briefcase that was attached to your wrist? Considering that the handle and locking mechanisms of briefcases are usually located on the same side, it stands to reason that Whit would notice if someone started trying to handle the briefcase—he'd feel them, if nothing else.
