I heard it from my friend who was in the middle of playing Minecraft on her tablet. She found diamond that way while I was watching her play and she explained it to me.

They're not really that rare, neither is iron. I find about a stack every five minutes.

I've found gold a few times but I've never found diamond except in Creative mode, so I consider diamond rarer.

Oh I forgot about emerald. I have never found that in Survival. Somehow diamond seems way cooler and rarer than anything on Minecraft even though it isn't.
