Focus on the Family recently released a press release for 25 years of Adventures in Odyssey<\/em>. What follows is the press release in its entirety:<\/p>\n

Colorado Springs, Colo. \u2013 The radio broadcast that defied expectations is marking 25 years of capturing the hearts of young and old alike.\u00a0Adventures in Odyssey (AIO)<\/a>, Focus on the Family\u2019s radio drama about big personalities in a small town called Odyssey and its ice cream emporium named \u201cWhit\u2019s End,\u201d aired its first episode on Nov. 21, 1987.<\/p>\n

Many were skeptical this venture would be successful in the age of television, movies and other visual entertainment. But the show proved the critics wrong and took on a life of its own. For a quarter of a century, AIO has been a staple for millions of families the world over \u2013 it airs in 45 countries, and in three languages: English, Spanish, plus a live action television series in Hindi.<\/p>\n

AIO reaches more than 2 million households each week, airing on 2,115 radio facilities in the U.S. alone, as well as being streamed online. More than 20 million CDs and cassettes have been sold worldwide. The series also spawned 17 videos, nearly three dozen novels, video games, music albums and more. AIO is one of the longest running radio dramas in history: If you listened to Odyssey from the very beginning, it would take 12 days, six hours, 51 minutes, and 19 seconds to reach the latest episodes.<\/p>\n

Fans can even visit Whit\u2019s End, the popular ice cream shop from the series. Focus\u2019s\u00a0Welcome Center<\/a>, which receives an estimated 250,000 guests from all 50 states and more than a 100 countries every year, houses an award-winning indoor play area dedicated to AIO. The interactive experience offers a recording studio where children can perform their own AIO episode; a three-story slide, A-Bend-A-Go; a puppet stage; Whit\u2019s End Soda Shoppe; and free birthday party rooms where more than 450 celebrations were held in 2011.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlmost every day we hear about the impact of Adventures in Odyssey,\u201d says Jim Daly, president of Focus on the Family. \u201cWe\u2019ve received many thousands of letters from children \u2013 and former children \u2013 whose hearts have been changed by AIO\u2019s themes of compassion, forgiveness, discipleship, and evangelism, all presented through good storytelling.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ministry says it often hears from 20- to 30-something adults who still regularly listen to AIO. Lance, with the United States Marine Corps, writes, \u201cI am a huge fan of the show and have listened to it ever since I can remember. Even to this day, stationed in Okinawa, Japan, I listen every night. The impact it has made on my life is exponential.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leon Wirth, executive director of Parenting and Youth at Focus, isn\u2019t surprised by the devotion children and adults alike feel towards AIO.<\/p>\n

\u201cAudio drama engages the imagination in a way television and movies fail to do,\u201d says Wirth. \u201cThis is why our listeners feel like they\u2019re a part of this world called Odyssey. As a dad, I am fortunate my daughters, my wife and I can immerse ourselves in a program that\u2019s entertaining, faith-affirming, and character-building. And the fact that we can do that through so many different mediums such as the radio, the Internet, CDs and downloads means we can enter Odyssey anytime, anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, AIO is hosting a\u00a0live show<\/a>\u00a0on June 16 in Dallas, Texas. Eight of the main characters will perform a new adventure on stage before an audience of thousands. AIO is also launching \u201cGet in the Show,\u201d a talent search contest for children ages 6-15. Hosted nationwide at Family Christian stores this July, the contest will give kids a chance to audition for the show. The winner will be part of AIO\u2019s Volume #58 in 2013.<\/p>\n

Christian recording artist Phil Joel has also written a song, \u201cGet in the Show<\/a>,\u201d especially for the festivities.<\/p>\n
