The
opportunity arose one week before I headed back to college for my third
semester in 2005. A couple with a growing ministry was looking for a way
to broaden their ministry through the internet. Word spread that I know
quite a bit about website design, so it wasn't a big surprise when the two
of them approached me about a web design job for Time Ministries. I gladly
took the reins and promised a finished website within the next several
months.
Initially, when a new website opportunity
stands before me, I start out with a blank template and wonder what the
website could look like. Then I get to work and find out what the
website won't look like. Typically I just begin tinkering around,
hoping for a burst of inspiration. Unfortunately that inspiration does not
come during the first hour of designing. Several hours after the first
design was finished, I looked back on my work with disgust. What had
looked appealing several hours ago now showed its errors, its
inconsistencies, its unfinished state. It looked choppy, uninviting, and
downright ugly. Here's one fact about creativity: it takes time to design
something, and when you think a design is finished, usually you'll find
out you're wrong later on.
Several weeks passed and the semester
became busier. Finally, toward the end of the fall semester, I completely
redesigned the website to its current design. There is a huge difference
between what appears now and what used to exist. Designing uses all
creativity, patience, and a good eye for fresh, appealing layouts. At the
end of the semester I put the site's content together and presented it to
the ministry. The three of us worked out the website's small problems and
the website was released in January 2006.
As a result of my efforts, Time
Ministries was very pleased. Yet it would be unfair to take the credit as
the Lord Jesus Christ gave me the talents I needed to accomplish His work
for this ministry. And that, simply put, is that - and all in good time,
too.
